A Fine Pair of George III Period Armchairs
Attributed to John Linnell
Circa 1780
The upholstered oval backs, channelled and finely carved with water leaf moulding headed by husks tied with a ribbon.
The elegantly shaped arms carved with leaves and scrolls over the bow fronted seat frames, carved with fluting and laurel leaves and upholstered seat. Supported on fluted legs with guilloche collars and headed by water leaves.
Height: 38.6 in (98cm), Width: 23.6 in (60cm), Depth: 25.2 in (64cm)
LITERATURE
A set of six related armchairs was supplied by John Linnell to the 5th Duke of Argyll for Inverary Castle Scotland in the 1770’s with similar arm supports and fluted seat rails. William and John Linnell. London 1980 vol II, p.46, fig 90.
