DESCRIPTION

The frieze carved with egg and dart moulding over a Greek key and ribbon and rosette, centered by a double scallop shell, raised on cabriole legs, carved with acanthus terminating in scrolled feet. Retaining the original off white painted finish (see paint analysis). Height: 30 ¾ in (77.5 cm) Width: 63 ¾ in (162 cm) Depth: 32 in (81 cm) This magnificent table was situated in the dining room at Rudding Park, Yorkshire, which was built for the Hon. William Gordon. In 1824 it was purchased by John Radcliffe. Rudding Park remained with the Radcliffe family until the Christie’s house sale in 1972. The sale included a further marble-topped table from the dining room which displays a very similar double scallop shell to the apron – perhaps suggesting that both were executed in the same workshop. The table had eight coats of later paint, and at Rudding Park a grained finish was applied by Wm Newton in 1826. These subsequent layers have now been carefully removed to reveal the original off white colour scheme.
