An important pair of George II period carved walnut Gainsborough armchairs
Upholstered in contemporary English needlework English, circa 1740
DESCRIPTION
The upholstered serpentine backs with padded arms with supports carved with rocaille and acanthus scrolling down to the rails lavishly carved with cabochons and acanthus supported on well shaped cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet with inset leather castors. The contemporary English needlework dated 1750. Height: 38 ½ in (97.5cm) Width: 26 in (66cm) Depth: 31 ½ in (80cm) These extremely well executed chairs are identical to a pair in the Getty Museum, acquired from Christie’s London 21st January 1960, lot 43, the collection of the late R. W. Miller, Esq. and included in a handbook of the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1986, cat. no. 265. This pair of Gainsborough armchairs are not only of good scale and deep and bold carving but also retain a wonderful colour and patina. The contemporary needlework they are upholstered in is of mirror image and, being of English manufacture, is of great rarity.
