A Pair of Green and Gilt Armchairs attributed to Mayhew and Ince Retaining their original decoration

London, 1780

Height: 36 in (91 cm)
Width: 25 in (63 cm)
Depth: 19 1/4 in (49 cm)

The shaped upholstered back and seat over a painted serpentine front rail with fluting and beading in gilt. The arms connected to the front legs and headed by carved paterae spiral twisted fluting over straight fluting terminating in spade feet.

These chairs are exceptional due to them retaining all of the original green and gilt decoration. They were over-painted, probably later in the nineteenth century in black and gold. Careful removal of this later paint revealed the original colour scheme in a rare state of presentation.
