£140,000

The seventeenth century scagliola top depicting hunting scenes in a wooded landscape with a central tablet of figures and trees. The eighteenth century mahogany table with a finely moulded frame over a cavetto and cushion moulding on turned tapering legs terminating in pad feet.

Height: 31 in (79 cm)
Width: 53 ½ in (136 cm)
Depth: 28 in (71 cm)

Fettercairn House was built in 1674 by John 1st Earl of Middleton (1608-1674) and was lived in over the years by the Forbes family of Pitsligo, who assembled an impressive and sought after collection. The Forbes family of Aberdeenshire were a diverse and interesting family, made up of bankers, statesmen and Jacobean rebels and created an impressive collection of pictures, books, porcelain, silver, objects d’art and furniture.
It is highly likely that this fine scagliola top was purchased by the family whilst on the Grand Tour in Italy. The table, dating from around 1740, is attributed to Alexander Peter of Edinburgh, who worked from 1728-1772. Stylistically there are close links to his work for the Earls of Dumfries at Dumfries House, Scotland. The use of dense West Indian mahogany, and the simple but perfectly proportional scale is indicative of his work.
