Suspended Forms, Oil on Canvas

June 1971

Height: 8’7 ½” (263cm) Width: 43 ½”(110.5cm) inclusive frame

Terry Frost developed the idea of suspended forms to enable colour and texture to be held without a hard structure, so it could be free to express only itself. The idea was to try and get the forms as free as possible. The horizontal D shapes of earlier works were ranged together in an enveloping series as a 20 feet banner made 1969, but they also became sagging curves and pendulous loops in a long and productive series from the late 60’s and into the 70’s and 80’s of which this painting is an early example.
