’Gosh’ demonstrates the strong influence the American abstract expressionists had on the artist. There is a much lighter feel to his work at this time compared to the more chaotic elements in his earlier pictures and there is a great sensation of the work welling out of the artist’s subconscious. In 1963 Alan Bowness hailed Davie as one of Britain’s most influential artists.
