REF212

The attribution of these chairs is based on a virtually identical pair of chairs commissioned for Petworth House in West Sussex, see Jourdain and Rose, “English Furniture – The Georgian Period”, page 82, illustration 44, and in the same work page 71, illustration 30. See also a pair made by Saunders in 1757 for the Earl of Leicester, Holkham, illustrated in Chippendale Furniture by Anthony Coleridge, No 378.

Identical chairs are illustrated in situ at Grimsthorpe Castle in Avray Tipping’s “English Homes Period IV – volume II, The Work of Sir John Vanbrugh”, page 303 – 304.
